Eastern Armenia is loosely defined as those parts of Armenia once ruled by Russia. That includes today's Republic of Armenia, Karabakh, Azerbaijan's Nakhichevan exclave and the Kars region (including the cities of Kars, Ardahan, and Igdir as well as Mount Ararat and the ruined medieval Armenian capital of Ani). The southern half of the former Batum Province with Artvin and Hopa may or may not be included.

The major dialect of Eastern Armenian is spoken in the former USSR, the former Warsaw Pact states, and Iran.
