The first good Armenian website I knew of was called "Window to Armenia" by Nelson Baloian, back in 1996. Cilicia.com began in Spring 1996 on a netcom account, before gaining its own URL a couple of years later. Armeniapedia.org is the first Armenian wiki I know of.
It is difficult to estimate actual number of Armenian Web Sites on the Web. Still, it is believed that it is between 1,000 and 2,000 Sites that have Armenia-related content. Number of Web Sites using Armenian language is around 300-500. Vast majority of Armenian-language Web Sites have ArmSCII-8 or Unicode encoding. Armenian-language Web Sites using other custom-made encodings, or even Latin, are really rare. Recent check of volumes of Unicode-Armenian data in the Web vs. ArmSCII-8-Armenian data showed that there is still more ArmSCII-8 data than Unicode. This picture is changing towards more data presented in Unicode and it is expected that in 2007 there will be more Unicode-Armenian data than ArmSCII-8 data.
All together Armenian Web Sites serve around 400,000 – 500,000 visitors per day. Ten per cent of most popular Armenian Web Sites account for over 80 per cent of the traffic. Around 45 per cent of all Web Sites are hosted in Armenia. The rest is hosted mainly in USA and Russia. Top-level domain name distribution favors .am over all others although there are many .com .ru domains.
