Andrei Gennadyevich Karlov (Russian: Андре́й Генна́дьевич Ка́рлов; 4 February 1954 – 19 December 2016) was a Russian career diplomat who served as the Russian Ambassador to Turkey and earlier as the nation's ambassador to North Korea.[1]

On the evening of 19 December 2016, while speaking at an art gallery exhibition in Ankara, Turkey, Karlov was assassinated by Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, an off-duty Turkish policeman.

Possible Armenian heritage

The assassinated Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was of Armenian descent on his mom's side. This is according to musician Ararat Mkrtchyan who performed in North Korea, while Karlov was ambassador there 10 years ago. Story also contains lyrics to the song about Russian-Korean friendship that Mkrtchyan wrote and performed and that Kim Jong Il liked so much he gave Mkrtchyan a 31-gram gold coin. http://russia-armenia.info/node/34549
