Aram Sarafian, passed away on September 9, 2010 at the age of 91. He had been unwell recently and he slipped away peacefully...
Aram was born in Cairo in 1919 and came to Ethiopia at a young age. His siblings - Shaké Sevadjian, Alice Behesnilian and Hrad Sarafian - predeceased him. He was a wise and conservative businessman and operated his spare parts business successfully for a long number of years. His nephew, Hrig Varjabedian, started working with him and took over the management of the business.
Aram enjoyed the outdoor life and camping and loved travelling extensively. He had a zest for life, a sense of humour and reveled in being surrounded by friends. He was an exemplary member of our Ethio-Armenian community. He had a conciliatory approach to most disagreements and conflicts and was adept at finding solutions. He had a big heart and helped, in his quiet way, a great number of people over the years.
He and his wife Alice fully participated in our Ethio-Armenian reunions in Los Angeles and Yerevan and enjoyed reconnecting with old friends. We shall remember fondly that he was recognized as the most senior member present at the Yerevan reunion in July 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Alice (Baghdassarian) of 52 years, Hrig Varjabedian whom he considered as his son, and his extended family:
- children of the late Shaké Sevadjian - Seta, Ani, Ada and their respective families;
- offspring of the late Alice Behesnilian - Gaby; and
- family of Hrad Sarafian - his wife Takoug and daughters Gaby and Dominique
- as well as the Baghdassarian, Varjabedian and Behesnilian families spread over a fair number of countries.
Funeral services will take place in Addis Ababa on September 9, 2010.
