I've been working on the formatting of the Armenian Language Lessons pages. I hope I've improved it. A specific request, could you check the table-isation of pronouns here ? I'm not a speaker of the language and may have messed it up. Regards - Francis Tyers 13:00, 6 December 2007 (PST)

:Glad you like it :)

:A couple of questions:

:1. Could you add the wikitable css to MediaWiki:Common.css ?

:2. Do you know the details of the copyright for the language lessons, I suppose that they are from some Soviet era course (considering the examples). Do you know exactly where they came from, so if I use examples I can cite them?

:Thanks, - Francis Tyers 06:01, 9 December 2007 (PST)

::OK, I added the css - I hope it works.  I didn't notice a difference, but maybe you will.  As for your second request, I have moved the original table of contents which you don't seem to have found from  "Armenian Lessons", to "Armenian Language Lessons", where you have been working.  There you will see the link to the Introduction (which has the info you're asking about - and indeed it was an old Soviet book), among other things.  --Raffi 18:25, 9 December 2007 (PST)

:::Thanks! It looks much better now (see the table here)), although it doesn't look exactly like the english wikipedia its fine. Great (about the table of contents), I basically found the other pages by going through and adding +1 to the number, obviously with 6a/6b this didn't work :) I'll get round to doing those other pages later. - Francis Tyers 23:10, 9 December 2007 (PST)

:::::Could you add the CSS below aswell please? :) - Francis Tyers 04:30, 10 December 2007 (PST)

ok, done!  I hope the other tables on other pages don't look funny after this... :-) --Raffi 05:52, 10 December 2007 (PST)

The Saroyan works
I just found your site after reading "Black Dog of Fate" by Peter Balakian.  I was so sad to see that I missed out on the Saroyan writings that you had on this site, because his family objected to this.  It's very disappointing especailly to Armenians who really are like me - hungry to get their hands on anything Armenian and really too poor to afford the greater luxuries of life - like books out of print, or books in general. This computer isn't even mine.

I am an American-Armenian - first generation born in New York City.  I am suffering from Leukemia and so I feel my days are numbered.  My sister sent me the book "Black Dog of Fate", and I read it in 2 days.  I cried through most of it, because this is the "life" my Mother suffered through. I don't know what was said to you, in full, as to why Saroyan's family did not want his writings read, but it seems a little selfish to deny the poorer Armenians a chance to  obtain a greater understanding of this great writer. Like Peter Balakian, my parents tried to sheild me from most of what they experienced in 1915 Armenia.  But my Mother told me a little and this hurt me, too.  But I feel everyone should know the truth - there is too little in the classrooms - I know, because my son is a High School History Teacher.  I hope to hear from you - thank you for a wonderful site. -Sandy(Rose)Siroonian

:Raffi, Thank you so much for your quick response - when I told my son about this site and what had happened to the Saroyan writings, he mentioned that it was probably a case of copyright infringement and maybe I would be able to find the writings somewhere else - but I did mention they were "out of print". I hope you're right about the family and that maybe they will somehow allow his older works to be accesssed in the future. Thank you again, Raffi.                          Respectfully, Sandy Siroonian

Contributions
Dear Raffi,

You may recall in November (07) I tried to list a book by the Armenia Author, Sooren Apkarian, my father.  I made an error on the listing and you very authoritatively deleted the entire contribution (which I'd work hours at creating).  I did write to you to explain that I was sorry for having made this error, requesting you to kindly just list the book and the ISBN, to no avail, as I never received a reply to my email.  I understand you are busy, as we all are, and I am now going to ask you again if you would be able to allow me to list just the name of the book and the ISBN, in the travel section as it is about my Sooren's trips to his homeland in the 70s.

Please can you please let me know if this is ok by you, Webmaster?

Thank you and I await your reply.  If I do not receive this email from you, I will presume it will be ok and simply contribute this basic information (name of book, name of author and ISBN, as is listed for other authors on the site), and I reassure you that this time I will not be contravening any of the rules for which I again apologise.

Yours sincerely,

Denise Apkarian Panattoni, BSc, MA

:Hi Denise, yes, I am very busy, but I try to make sure contributions here are valued, unless they are just overly spam-like or ridiculous, which yours does not sound like...  so what was the mistake you made, on what page, and what makes you think I got your email?  I have no idea what you're talking about, and don't remember deleting, nor any email.  I state very clearly that any messages to me need to be put on this page, so I'm not sure why you would send an email or where.  In any case, there is no need to call my changes authoritative, or call me Webmaster (with a capital W no less), this is neither flattering nor funny.  From what I understand from your explanation, you need to put your info on a Sooren Apkarian page for now, and perhaps list the book name on an appropriate list of books in the book section.  Also if you go to the page you worked on, and click on history, you can easily see your old contributions...  I could not find any trace of a change on the book pages in November. Good luck, --Raffi 10:50, 31 January 2008 (PST)

Dear Raffi

Thank you for your reply.  I have done as you've suggested and created a Sooren Apkarian page.  I note above that you state you couldn't find the former page I was referring to, and I think this may be because I'd entered it with my Armenian username Apkar.  Nevertheless, I've now created a page and I hope this is ok. Ideally, it would be nice to have this book 'My Armenian Heritage' listed on the BOOK page of Armeniapedia, as well. Is this possible in it's current format, or should I edit it down to very brief, like the other books mentioned are listed? Please advise. Thank you and kind regards,

denise apkarian panattoni

:You're welcome.  I actually couldn't find any changes that you could have been referring to, so as far as I can tell, you never successfully saved them.  In any case, the page looks good now, and you can link to it from the Armenian Biographical Books page, in the same format as the other books.  Thanks, --Raffi 21:50, 1 February 2008 (PST)

Hi raffi jan,

I recently posted a clip on YouTube called:

Armenian Genocide - The Fact

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt3LZL45oo0

Relating to that famous Raphael Lemkin's interview on CBS, which I think is one of the most important documents & yet is being neglected by our own historians in the fight against denialist propaganda.

While reading Harout Sassounian's article on Armeniapedia, I was thinking that would be wise idea to see a link to Raphael Lemkin's clip, either hosted on your site or linked to my YT clip.

I could't see how to do that, if it's possible.

Appreciate your help.

The map of the city of Van
Dear Raffi

The map presented as the map of the city of van in the article: Van is wrong.

According to the aerial photographs and the topographical maps I have your map does not correspond to the reality.

Yours

Thadeus Gregorian

:Hi Thadeus - my understanding is that the map is correct.  That Van was virtually flattened during WWI and the current city has been rebuilt nearby - but not on the actual site...  especially the Armenian areas.  --Raffi 10:55, 9 May 2008 (PDT)

Raffi,

I am interested in the topographic maps of Western Armenia north of these you have uploaded, up to the Black Sea coast, i.e. from Sebastia (Sivas) to Kars. Would be grateful if you can help me in this - I read Cyrillic, so I have no problem with the names. Thanks in advance!

:Hi - that is a pretty huge area, what exactly are you doing/do you need?  I can't do that many at this time. --Raffi 01:18, 26 June 2008 (PDT)

My origins are from Sebinkarahisar and I need the area around it and the road to Giresun (on the Black Sea coast), if it is not too big a trouble. I have the 1:200,000s but you seems to have access to 1:100,000s. The two scales have different notations so there is no point giving you my numbers (J38.***, etc).

Thanks,

Krikor

:I need to know more about where exactly that is, Krikor.  I don't know when I can get to this.  When do you need it?  Are you going?  --Raffi 12:26, 29 June 2008 (PDT)

Adding images of Armenian Stamps to articles and biographies
Since the 1992 Independence, Armenia has issued some 450 stamps of which about 60 are for famous Armenians.  William Saroyan, Khachaturian, Levon Shant, Khrimian Hayrik, Alishan, Gregor Artsrouni, Tigran Petrosian, and many many more, even foreign names who have contributed to Armenia and Armenians, Nansen, Franz Werfel, Lazar Serebryakov and so on.

As the official agent and distributor for the stamps of Armenia in the USA, I am willing to add the images of all these stamps to the biography pages of the above mentioned  individuals at Armeniapedia.

First, I like to ask for permission, and Second, how to edit and add .jpg images.

Intermarriage, etc.
I added something a bit less subjective to that page. You can see the Discussion as well. It's on-topic, and a place to start, better than a red link, no?  And thanks for Wikifying my rant :)  Now if I could just figure out how to get a footnote...

Thanks for keeping the scribbling, rather than just deleting it altogether, but please understand that I get paid to write.  I don't put together articles for kicks or ego, and my fingers get plenty of workout every day with my work, so...  Please let me know what you intend for specific pages so that I don't waste time on writing that isn't what you had in mind.  With a blank page there, and no Discussion, it was pretty much impossible to tell your intent.  Seeing a glaring red link, I tried to fill it.  Perhaps you'd rather direct me to specific subjects you want addressed? --Falc 22:38, 27 November 2008 (PST)

Raffi, got it. I will put your comments regarding what you want for Intermarriage onto the Discussion page, as a guide for others.  That would probably be a good idea for any red subject that may not be clear.  Just a thought, from someone who is looking at this 'Pedia with new eyes.  (Personally, since facts and figures type data is unlikely to ever surface, it seems that the heading is relegated to a list centered around famous Armenians.  That could be a far more interesting tale, and the intermarriage aspect an aspect of the story.  For now, I'll just see what I have time for.  --Falc 08:32, 28 November 2008 (PST)

help me  remember my friend
Hey Raffi,

My names Elsa, I'm 19. I'm from the US.

When I was 11 my bestfriend, Anik, died. She was armenian and was born there.

I'm planning on getting a tattoo for her soon, and I have it planned out, except I need a little help

I want to get an armenian word tattooed below the angel wings.

some of the words I was thinking of are;

brave

courage

beauty

remember

love

bravery

I was wondering if you could translate those for me so I get the tattoo correct,

also maybe you could suggest something, maybe there is an armenian phrase used to remember loved ones?

i would really appreciate your help

Thanks a bunch

Elsa

:Hi Elsa - hopefully me or someone else can help - but I have a question, do you want it in Armenian letters, or English letters (but Armenian words)??  Please specify...  --Raffi 14:02, 3 December 2008 (PST)

: Hello, Raffi and Elsa.  I would think that Anik's name, in the Armenian characters, would be very fitting.  Perhaps Raffi can help with that. --Falc 14:44, 3 December 2008 (PST)

::I assume she was from Armenia, and her name would be written Անիկ in Armenian.  Hope that helps... --Raffi 12:03, 8 January 2009 (PST)

Translation
How do you write "Sisters" in Armenian? I would like to get this tattoo with my other sisters and can't seem to find it translated in the Armenian language and I just want to make sure that it looks correct!

:In Armenia, it is written քույրեր (or if you want to capitalize, Քույրեր).  Western Armenians and Persian-Armenians would spell it քոյրեր (note that the little character ւ is missing) - so pick which one is right for you, since there are two spelling systems :-)  --Raffi 12:03, 8 January 2009 (PST)

Raffi, I was hoping that you could help me. I'm trying to help out a friend get a hold of someone in Yerevan. Sadly my friend's friend passed away in the USA and they have no contact information to notify the family. Do you have a suggestion of how I can help them get in touch with the family. I have all the contact names, info etc. Thanks in advance. Jonathan

Lessons
Barev.

Over the last few weeks i have vaguely been through the first chapter of the lessons, and have wanted to learn the Armenian language for a while. The lessons are very well written and explain the language better than all the other sites i have been to. My only problem is i don't really know how to pronounce the letters or words. I have been on another site that has the pronunciation for each of the letters and has helped with single letters, but then theres all the rules about letters sometimes not being pronounced or letters changing with the word they're in. I was wondering if it was possible some time in the recent future to get staff or members of this site to record themselves saying some of the words to give people like me ,who want to learn the language but have difficulties because of the lack of resources to learn pronunciation, a helping hand. It's especially difficult where it asks to compare the difference between two words that are the same apart from one letter or so. Hope you can get back to me and maybe start with this some time.

Matty :)

Thanks for the quick reply. Very helpful. The only few problems are the letters that are close to the sounds of each other, like the r and the hard r, and it asks to say the words and correctly pronounce the words with the different letters, but with there just being one r in the English language said in different ways its hard to distinguish between each, and as i dont know the difference in the sounds because i haven't heard the two words being said separately so i can hear the differences its just a little confusing.

Matty

Thank you again for the reply. If you sometimes cant tell the difference then do you have to go with the word that suits the sentance if the 2 words are said the same apart from the r then? would you just have to go with instinct?

Matty

Thank you for all the help. Im still a teenager so i decided to spend the time im not doing coursework and artwork on something useful like learning a language, and Armenian stood out because not that many people would know its a place because of the tiny amoutn of coverage the country gets, but the people who know about it talk about it so well, and Yerevan and other Armenian areas look very nice, and would deffinatley be a place i wanted to go to when im old enough to be affording these srorts of things. Thanks for all the help.

Matty

Thanks for all the help and reasurance. The thing i was worried about is if i had gone through this and learnt what i thought to be correct but met someone who knew the language and i said something but because i hadnt known the sounds or word pronunciations id learnt it wrong so i wasnt making any sense. Thanks for everything :)

My name is Setrak Setrakian, Composer and Pianist, I live in Beirut,

I am writting you again and would appreciate if you could help. Some (long time) ago you have removed link from jobs in Armenia. I am not quite sure why. But if you could tell the reason I'll try to fix it.

I have a page in Armaeniapedia, I be happy if you can add my photo on my page with great appreciation, also be kind and add my name to Armenian Hall of Fame.
Is there any chance to return this link? There are many links on this page out of date and i just though that it would be beneficial to have current sites there.

I have just created my website called www.paroiancollection.com and it is now up and running (Still updating). The website is regarding the Coins which were minted and issued during the Kingdom of Cilician Armenia.

Having a look through the web, I feel that my webiste( all coins are in our possession, father and I ) is one of the few which could be used as a point of reference for anyone who is studying or is interested in these coins.

How could I include this website to Armeniapedia? Please note that this is not to advertise my site, it is to use it as a point of reference.

Thanks Raffi and keep up the good work.

Great site. A lot of information, and nice to have the option to edit stuff, but... on the Introduction-site I can't edit the page and there's an erronous link on it to the Armenian Embassy in Belgium. It now points to some advertising stuff/free domain. The correct link is http://www.armembassy.be/ .

Sites allowing Armeniapedia use of materials

FAQ (frequently asked questions)

 1. Can I use material from Armeniapedia.org? -you can use it for your own private personal use and your classroom without asking permission. For use in publications and other websites - my policy is ASK ME FIRST! I usually say ok to requests to any use these materials with proper attribution, but not always. Same goes for photographs.
 2. Can I use material from Armeniapedia.org on Wikipedia.org? - again, you must ask, and again usually I am fine with it.
 3. Can I add material from Wikipedia onto Armeniapedia? -anytime, that is their policy, but please add the wikipedia tag to the bottom of the page to make sure the page complies with fair useage and gives proper credit.
 4. Can I add a page about myself? -sure, and any other Armenian or person place or thing related to Armenians!
 5. What if I want to add something, but maintain my copyright? -that is fine, just add it in a seperate section (or page) with the appropriate disclaimer and state that it should not be edited - though this type of material might eventually migrate to a sub page.
 6. How do I reach you? -I check this page often, so it is an ideal way to reach me. Also see Armeniapedia.org contact page
 7. Who are you? -see the Raffi Kojian article
