Today the protocols are supposed to be considered by the Turkish parliament for ratification. The same will no doubt happen shortly in Armenia. Strangely, it seems that every step of the way, Turkey insists that it is interested in implementing these protocols, in which it has been able to gain serious Armenian concessions, but Turkey is just as insistent that they will not open the border until the Karabakh issue is settled. Since these two positions seem quite contradictory, and since the border would presumably open anyway if a Karabakh peace deal is signed, this all seems quite nonsensical.
Is this all a game to make the West stop bugging them about the border opening and the genocide? Is it a trick to enable them to get these extra concessions out of Armenia right before a Karabakh peace treaty is signed? What is going on??
