500 ARMENIANS SLAIN UNDER TURKISH ORDER
Forced by Cold and Hunger to Surrender, Men, Women, and Children Were Put to Death.
JANUARY 15, 1916
LONDON,Jan.14.--Armenian refugees arrived at Erivan, Russian Trascaucasia, state that 500 Sasun Armenians who were forced by cold and famine to surrender to the Turks under the Government amnesty, were killed by order of the Governor of Mush. The men were massacred and the women and children drowned in the Euphrates River. This news was telegraphed to Viscount Bryce by an Armenian refugee worker.
Commenting on the telegram to Viscount Bryce from the frontier of Russian Transcaucasia and Asiatic Turkey, the Armenian Refugees Committee in London says:
"This seems to indicate the final destruction of the unfortunate Armenian peasantry who fled to the mountains to escape massacre. They were the most manly part of the Armenian nation, leading a quiet life in the remote valleys of the Euphrates."
