Your Thursday report contains 3549 words. 14-minute read.
Syrian SOHR agency says Turkey has recently sent 230 more Syrian militants to fight for Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, 342 militants left everything and returned to Syria. Another 9 were identified dead yesterday.
re: the failed UN Security Council meeting on October 20
The Security Council, which has the exclusive right to intervene, held a meeting and was supposed to rule on enforcing ceasefire but one of the five (China, France, Russia, UK, USA) permanent members "sabotaged" the vote, thus approving only a general statement by the Council. It's not clear who vetoed and why.
re: NSS agents engaging with Azeri army
The National Security Services agents' team engaged with the Azeri army and published the video yesterday. It was posted here but without details. Here is the breakdown:
An Azeri armored vehicle drives forward, presumably to help their troops who are in a Toyota pickup, commonly used by Syrian jihadists.
The armored vehicle reaches/passes the Toyota and uses a machine gun to fire at Armenian soldiers who are somewhere in front (left side of the video, invisible). Azeri bullet traces are seen hitting the ground.
The driver decides to retreat. He makes a U-turn but at the 1:04 mark, he gets hit with an Armenian RPG. On the far-left corner, there is a small white cloud that may or may not show the Armenian soldier's firing position.
Now the Azeri vehicle is disabled and burning. He continues to use the machine gun attached to the roof against Armenians who have, at this point, ambushed him from multiple corners. [video cuts]
An Azeri tank rushes to help. It reaches the destroyed Azeri armored vehicle and stops to engage with Armenians. At that moment, from the left side, another Armenian soldier fires an RPG and disables the tank. You can see the little grey cloud/air-distortion caused by the missile as it travels through the air towards the tank at the 2:08 mark.
The third Azeri armored vehicle, that was accompanying the tank, decides to escape. Fate unknown.
the sale of drone components to Turkey
ANCA has identified the international companies that sell components to Turkish Bayraktar drones and organized a campaign to suspend the sales. Several companies (Wescam, Garmin, and Trimble) have agreed.
few things from yesterday
The ex-president of Bolivia Evo Morales released a video in support of Artsakh and Armenia. Bolivia recognized the Armenian Genocide under Morales's presidency.
Azeri Colonel Hafiz Agaev was killed in a vehicle; he was one of the commanders of reconnaissance units. Later, reports arrived about the deaths of Lt. Colonels Gharib Bakhshaliyev and Musaev Sayid Suleimanoglu.
November 5 // battlefield & analysis // diplomacy & international response // donations & demonstrations
2:33: the Canadian city Laval has officially recognized the independence of Artsakh. It urges the Canadian govt to recognize the need for the "secession for salvation" principle.
9:02 Artsakh govt: the enemy resumed bombing civilian settlements in the morning. Heavy artillery was used against Martuni and Shushi.
9:17 Russian WarGonzo reporter: a fog is forming over Stepanakert. There is an operation to neutralize the Azeri infiltrators in the "Hell Gorge" [near Shushi]. It's hard work, but the boys don't whine and don't give up. To those who helped at least a little, the boys are saying thank you. They are standing here right now.
10:01 army: the night was stable-tense. The enemy was active in the east, southeast, and south. Numerous attacks were successfully repelled. Azeris sustained significant human and equipment losses.
Two Azeri groups attacked in the north but they were detected and destroyed in a timely manner. They are making more attempts. Our army is in control of the operative-tactical situation across all fronts.
9:51: Co-chairs of the Swiss-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group wrote a letter to both Swiss chambers, urging them to officially recognize Artsakh "just as it was done with Kosovo".
The letter mentions Azeri-Turkish war crimes against civilians and the targeting of religious and cultural sights.
The letter was signed by three Swiss MPs, including the Speaker of the Swiss Parliament Isabelle Moret, and one MP representing each chamber.
11:00: Artsakh refugee women held a protest in front of the German embassy in Yerevan. They criticized the close relations between Turkey and Germany and the lack of steps to end the aggression by their ally. Their request to meet an embassy delegation was turned down, after which they tore the letter that they had prepared.
Protesters held signs depicting Angela Merkel hugging Erdogan, who bore Adolf Hitler's resemblance.
Interview with a refugee:
12:13: Berdzor and Shushi cities are being bombed.
12:22: Zolakar residents are helping Artsakh. Kesoyan family donated $77,000 to Artsakh refugees and www.HimnaDram.org . Diasporans donated millions of Rubles.
12:31 army: at around 10:30, Azeris used armored vehicles to attack the eastern front. We repelled it and threw them back. Azeris lost 1 armored vehicle, 1 truck, and a large number of soldiers.
12:54: Australian Institute of Holocaust and Genocide Studies is concerned about the growing risk of genocide against the native population of Artsakh, said the institute, and urged the Australian govt to take action against war crimes.
"Since 27 September 2020, Azerbaijan, supported by Turkey, has launched aggressive attacks against the region of Artsakh, including attacks targeting Armenian civilians.. [full statement in link]."
12:59 Italian conductor Gianluca Marcianò: The best gift for my birthday would be the recognition of Artsakh by the world and the immediate end of the war. Stay strong.
13:04 Mark Hendrix, Councilman of Mechelen, Belgium: Baku knows that their soldiers act inhumanely and against the rules of war. I don't know why the EU and NATO are still silent about the targeting of civilians. The targeting of journalists is unacceptable.
13:15 president Arayik: I visited Shushi today and met the defenders of the city to discuss the defense strategy. The defensive fortifications created by the joint efforts of professional soldiers and volunteers, and the boys' determination, inspire hope that every effort will be made to keep the fortress city safe.
Shushi, with its rich cultural values and traditions, is one of the greatest legacies we have inherited from our ancestors, and we must pass it on to our generations in the same Armenian spirit. Special thanks to "Hero of Artsakh" Colonel-General Seyran Ohanyan.
13:23: Russian-Armenians sent 50 tons of humanitarian aid, medicine, clothing. The Union of Armenians in Russia has donated 200m Rubles.
13:25: president Sarkissian to Swedish Sveriges Radio: the international community is not reacting decisively enough to the outbreak of the war. World leaders underestimate Turkey's role in the conflict.
13:24: Artsakh president issued posthumous Medal of Courage to ten policemen who died defending the borders since September 27th.
13:53 Education Ministry: 33,000 children in Artsakh and some parts of the Republic of Armenia had their education interrupted due to the war.
The education reforms, which began before the war, envision changes in the military education curriculum in [higher] schools. There will be closer cooperation with military camps for hands-on practice. This will also apply to basic civil defense education in schools.
13:58 European Parliament MP Rob Roos: The Armenians are going through very difficult times. I am calling on the EU to condemn the aggression from Azerbaijan and Turkey against Armenia in the strongest possible sense.
14:37: Arpi grabbed the media attention after joining the army training with full makeup on. She isn't the only woman in the volunteer squad. Azeri outlets described her as a "terrorist sniper".
15:05: Spanish MP John Inarritu released a video from the Stepanakert hospital bombed by Azerbaijan and urged the world to "stop the genocide by Azerbaijan and Turkey."
15:45: army released a clip to pay tribute to Yezidi-Armenians who volunteered to join the army. The latest unit is named after Qyaram Sloyan, the Yezidi-Armenian soldier who died defending his position in 2016 and was subsequently beheaded by an Azeri officer, who received a medal by Azeri President Ilham Aliyev.
15:58: Italy is on fire! STEAMROLL! Two more Italian towns have officially recognized Artsakh. The Armenian embassy has thanked the municipalities of Drania and Bleggio Superiore.
15:59: Rock singer Marine Manasyan's November 19th concert will donate the proceeds to Artsakh.
16:00 army: Azerbaijan has so far lost 7,290 soldiers, 257 drones, 723 tanks and armored vehicles, 25 aircrafts, 16 helicopters, 6 TOS.
16:27: another photo evidence shows that Azerbaijan placed their artillery units too close their own civilian settlements. Only 50 meters away from Askipara village. This endangers the civilians.
16:44: a group of 34 Czech Parliament MPs expressed solidarity with Armenians, condemned the use of illegal weapons against Artsakh civilians, condemned Turkey's involvement, and the import of ISIS and other terrorists in the region.
17:02: Lithuanian Yonishkis city mayor Vitalijus Gailius criticized the Lithuanian government's "passive role in South Caucasus". He expressed solidarity with Armenians.
17:37 Investigative Committee: there are confirmed 21 Armenian POW soldiers in Azerbaijan. Data about two others is being clarified. Sometimes photos are being uploaded showing crimes against the POWs. We have contacted relevant bodies about this.
We are taking steps to find and establish a connection with the relatives of the two arrested Syrian militants but it's hard because they don't have a phone/connection; we're working with Syrian officials.
We launched a felony investigation against the "Qarabag" Azeri soccer club official Ibrahimov for encouraging the genocide of Armenians.
18:05: Iran is moving additional military equipment near its northern borders with Artsakh.
18:14 Russian MFA: Moscow has received information about the transfer of militants from the Middle East to Nagorno Karabak. Their hands are dipped in blood. These are extremist mercenaries. They believe in the ideology of jihadism. This is worrying because it could lead to the formation of a terrorist enclave in the Caucasus.
We urge both sides to exercise restraint, not to allow foreign intervention [Turkey], and to take practical steps towards a ceasefire.
21:11: Ilham Aliyev criticized Russia and France for a "bias" after they pointed out the presence of 2,000 Syrian jihadists in Azerbaijan.
"It is a pity that high-ranking officials of countries that are supposed to remain neutral refer to unverified rumors. More than a month has passed, but we have not been provided with any evidence [of Syrian mercenaries].
So why do they turn a blind eye to what is happening on the Armenian side and how many mercenaries are fighting on the Armenian side? [that's how he describes Armenians returning home from abroad]", said Alieyv.
18:53: The U.S. city of Englewood Cliffs (New Jersey) has officially recognized the independence of Artsakh. The resolution also condemns the Turkish-Azeri aggression.
Another New Jersey city (Fort Lee) had earlier recognized it, while New Jersey Senate has a resolution that condemns Azerbaijan for the attack.
18:59 Artsakh govt: Azerbaijan bombed civilian areas of Martuni. GRAD was used against Shushi. Capital Stepanakert was bombed twice today.
19:50: welcome to Yerevan metro. Would you like to write a letter to a random soldier on the front lines? Here is a pen, paper, and a mailbox:
19:52: Artsakh govt has issued awards to dozens of members of reconnaissance and special forces soldiers. The details are kept secret due to the nature of their job.
20:00 army: several Azeri attacks were repelled throughout the day. Small groups of infiltrators were found and destroyed with our snipers and other methods near Qarin Tak (not far from Shushi) and Lisagor.
An armored vehicle movement towards/accumulation Shushi was also found and destroyed. The operations to find and destroy infiltrators continue.
20:31: two German MPs (CDU and Free Democrats) held a press conference and urged Angela Merkel to sanction Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev and other officials, citing "Azerbaijan's violation of humanitarian laws that led to a humanitarian crisis."
"President Aliyev admitted during an interview to German media in late-October that his goal is to remove Armenians from Nagorno Karabakh. This is ethnic cleansing and a war crime.
Illegal cluster bombs are being used against civilians. Armenian POWs are demonstrably executed and beheaded. Each Syrian militant is paid $100 for each beheading.
The sanctions should freeze banking assets, deny entry to the EU, revoke the right to use European airlines, and to severe of ties with German and European banks," says the letter by German MPs.
20:54: MFAs of Russia and Germany discussed the conflict.
21:14: WarGonzo published an intense video from the battles against infiltrators near Qarin Tak. Olympics Silver medalist wrestler Mihran Harutyunyan is also there.
The Armenian groups encircled the Azeri group, so the latter decided to engage in close combat. WarGonzo's Semyon Pegov and a group of Armenians received fire. One soldier was wounded. Reporter Pegov helped to evacuate him.
21:32: Turkish state-run TV accidentally reported the truth. "Azerbaycan sivillere saldırıyor" (Azerbaijan targeted the civilians), read the giant banner on the screen. The incident caused outrage in Turkish media and social media. They noted similar "mistakes" by the same outlet.
21:53 NSS has arrested a suspected spy: Armenian citizen M.S. visited Istanbul in 2015 where he was recruited by Azeri intelligence. Upon his return to Armenia in 2019, he took steps to gather info about Armenian troops, weapon locations, etc. He tried to join the army for better info but was rejected for health issues, so he demanded a second medical examination and insisted to join the army. The suspect has confessed.
21:56: a video was uploaded claiming to show Armenians installing the Armenian flag after recapturing a position.
22:00 army spokesman Artsrun's briefing: the battles continued nonstop all night because the Azeri infiltrator groups near Shushi forests/gorges are trying to "solve" certain problems. After meeting our army's resistance they usually refuse to engage in long battles. We were able to encircle and destroy several groups.
Azeri president says his army is attacking towards Shushi, however, there is a question, how come do we have to seek these "attackers" and destroy them one by one. During any war, you don't have to "seek" the attackers. The attacker just "comes".
Heavy battles resumed in the morning with the use of artillery. Throughout the day, in the north, center, and south, Azeris used small groups and a minimal number of armored vehicles to try to advance but were thrown back after sustaining losses.
I predict tonight will be the same. The anti-infiltrator "sanitary groups" will continue to clear the forests. We published a video of destroyed infiltrators yesterday and could publish another tomorrow.
Those Azeri infiltrators and mercenaries, who push forward with a hope to achieve a result for November 9th (National Azeri Flag Day), with a hope to uplift their spirits after days of failures, are doomed.
I don't know if it's Aliyev's or Erdogan's idea, but every neutralized mercenary and Azeri soldier has been carrying the Azeri flag. We find the flags in everyone's' pockets. Aliyev is desperately trying to uplift his nation's spirit but he doesn't realize that these groups cannot solve problems.
It's clear that the infiltrators and mercenaries won't succeed because Shushi and nearby residents are defending their settlements. Yes, the battles continue in these areas, but the situation is not dire. There are technical and logistic difficulties but Operation Gyorbagyor2020 will continue, and these gorges and forests will turn into their Hell.
For three days straight, Azeris tried to break through the Martuni area (center east) to control a highway to save their infiltrator groups who are trapped. They failed. Operation Gyorbagyor continues.
I don't know, maybe Aliyev promised large sums to anyone who can infiltrate and plant a flag in Shushi, or maybe they do so under the threat of being shot?
Q: what's the latest into on the recent battles near Qarin Tak (south of Shushi).
A: the neutralization of these groups continues. Just now I got info that a 30-member group was encircled and destroyed. Some managed to escape. Some of the infiltrators were killed while trying to climb the Qarin Tak rocks (a few km south of Shushi).
Q: how safe are the roads? Reporters Without Borders agency says 80 reporters cannot leave Artsakh safely.
A: we've mentioned before that Azeris target journalists, civilians, clinics, and churches. Nothing surprising. I spoke with many of these reporters; the army has created all the conditions for them to leave if they wish. There are no barriers. It's another question that they could be targeted while traveling but there are safer roads.
The Sotk-Qarvachar road is safe for travel, I used it yesterday and today, but it's still restricted for civilians as a precautionary measure. The Shushi road has been cleared from infiltrators and there are Armenian patrols alongside but it's still restricted for civilians for now.
The battles continue. They aren't very intense but there are certain difficulties associated with the nature of infiltration warfare. There is no easy way to face all the enemies and destroy them. Today they sneaked-in equipment near Karmis Shuka but were found and destroyed, including a vehicle that was carrying personnel.
They try to achieve even the slightest success for propaganda but as you can see our soldiers are determined. We will win.
22:21: Azerbaijan has a military barrack in the suburb of Tartar city. Satellite images show the damage done to it. Azerbaijan often accuses Armenians of "targeting Tartar city".
22:59 WarGonzo: I'm in Stepanakert. It's been 2-3 days the airs are clear from enemy drones. That's the "surprise" that army spokesman Artsrun had earlier promised.
00:00 WarGonzo: the group of infiltrators that fired at our group near Qarin Tak earlier today has been neutralized.
